African Rivers
African Rivers is a vibrant, inclusive and gender focused international not-for-profit conservation organization legally registered under the Zambian laws pursuant to the Non-Governmental Organizations’ Act, No. 16 of 2009. The guiding philosophy for African Rivers is “Water, Life and Peace” knowing that we all cannot survive on the planet earth without rivers. A river is a symbol of freedom and an opportunity tool.
As African Rivers, we believe once the rivers are sufficiently protected they will remain healthy and safe to provide clean water, valuable to human sanitation and support wildlife habitation and ultimately remain safe for use in various economic activities on the African continent.
Zambezi River Authority
The roots of the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) trace back to November 1964, marked by the establishment of the Inter-Territorial Hydro-Electric Commission by the Central African Council. A pivotal moment occurred in May 1951 when the Commission recommended the development of the Kariba Dam and hydro-electric power station. Over the years, legislative acts led to the formation of entities like the Federal Hydro-Electric Board and later the Central African Power Corporation (CAPCO) in 1963. In 1987, the Zambezi River Authority Act dissolved CAPCO, birthing the ZRA in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Today, the ZRA is entrusted with the crucial role of operating and maintaining the Kariba Dam Complex, exploring new dam sites on the Zambezi River, and disseminating essential hydrological and environmental information related to the Zambezi River and Lake Kariba. With a rich history and a commitment to sustainable water management, ZRA stands at the forefront of hydro-electric power in the region.
